PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Background

Wharton Dual Language Academy, an 88-year old institution, embarked on an ambitious project that fused the preservation of its historic essence with the need for a modern educational environment. The initiative involved both an intricate interior renovation of the original one-story structure and the addition of a striking three-story new building, significantly increasing the academy’s capacity to serve its community.

Approach

Collaborating with Munoz, AUTOARCH’s design vision for WDLA was multifaceted. The standout three-story entrance not only adds a contemporary feel but also stands as a distinguished landmark in the historic neighborhood. Drawing inspiration from the original building’s brick and architectural motifs, the new addition seamlessly incorporates these elements into its modern, colorful design. This thoughtful blending ensures that the academy remains rooted in its history while looking forward to a vibrant, technology-rich 21st Century learning space. Strategic decisions, such as preserving most of the grand trees and innovatively using the sports field as a detention pond, address the site’s spatial constraints while respecting its natural assets.

Result

The reimagined Wharton Dual Language Academy has emerged as a beacon of architectural excellence that marries the past with the present. Expanding its capacity to accommodate 900 students, the academy now boasts new learning spaces, flexible labs, a state-of-the-art gym, and a revamped library. This harmonious blend of design innovation and respect for legacy earned WDLA the accolade of “Outstanding Project” in the 2020 Learning by Design Architectural and Interior Design Awards of Excellence in the Combined-Level School category.
