PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Background

Driven by HISD’s unwavering commitment to academic excellence, the inception of the new Sharpstown High School embodies the principles of contemporary and sustainable school design. It represents a pivotal shift towards forward-thinking educational infrastructures, where the physical layout of the school is an integral part of the educational experience.

Approach

AUTOARCH collaborated with Munoz for the vision for Sharpstown High School, which was centered around a two-story building that features an open, linear mall connecting five distinct educational neighborhoods. This unique design choice ensures that students are always on the move, making the mall a bustling, lively space. More than just a circulation space, the mall functions as a multi-purpose area, hosting elements of the Learning Commons, Auditorium pre-function, and Dining Commons. This multipurpose approach ensures that the mall remains a vibrant hub, even during class sessions. However, challenges arose when the program requirements expanded post the allocation of the construction budget by the School Board. Navigating this constraint, AUTOARCH employed innovative construction and design techniques. By opting for an aesthetically pleasing tilt-up wall design, the team was able to maintain the desired square footage without compromising on the building’s visual appeal.

The design for Sharpstown High School incorporated a phased plan where the new High School building was designed and constructed in the parking lot and field location of the existing site, allowing the existing building to remain open and operational throughout the construction. Only when the students were able to occupy the new building, was the existing school demolished.

Result

The end result is a beautifully crafted Sharpstown High School that not only meets the updated programming needs but also stays within the pre-determined budget. This innovative approach resulted in a school that stands as a beacon of modern design and community pride.
