PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Background

Situated in the Hiram Clarke neighborhood, James Madison High School underwent a transformative journey to become an award-winning academic hub. Catering to 2,100 students and faculty, the redesigned facility now boasts flexible learning environments spread across two distinct levels of neighborhood-based learning centers. The curriculum’s foundational premise is to prepare students for both higher education and purposeful employment, and this intention is echoed in the school’s physical layout. The ground level houses specializations such as Metal Manufacturing, Automotive, and Agriculture, while the upper echelon is devoted to fields like Engineering, Computer Science, and Biotechnology.

Approach

In a collaborative effort, AUTOARCH and Huitt-Zollars embraced several pivotal facets of the project. The Natatorium, a later addition nearing the completion of the main facility, was aesthetically aligned with the primary building. Using a blend of modular tilt-up concrete panels and brick accent walls, this annex was integrated so seamlessly that it appeared to be an original component. As the new structure took shape, the existing school was strategically dismantled, ensuring minimal disruption to the school’s functions and schedules. Additionally, as the project was drawing to a close, the District chose to re-envision the second floor, introducing a career technical education classroom tailored for cosmetology. This decision transformed a standard classroom into a dedicated wet lab. The design prioritized Career Technical Education (CTE) spaces, encapsulating labs and classrooms for automotive repair, welding, and agriculture, all accompanied by a modern greenhouse and advanced science labs.

Result

The culmination of efforts at James Madison High School is not just an architectural marvel, but also a space conducive to modern learning. The project’s innovative and adaptive approach has earned it many awards, including the 2019 Learning by Design Outstanding Project, 2019 AMCH Golden Trowel Excellence Award, 2019 Tilt-Up Achievement Award, and the 2020 Texas Exhibit of School Architecture Project. These honors reflect the dedication and expertise brought to the table by AUTOARCH and Huitt-Zollars, creating a space that is both functional and inspiring.
